“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago”—Warren Buffet
I drove past a home that had a huge orchard – orange and mango trees, it had a guava tree, bananas in the corner, avocado tree and even had a grape vine. My mouth watered just at the thought of when all the fruit is in season. This made me reflect on how long it takes for a tree to grow and bear fruit, or even for it to give a meaningful shade. That’s legacy.
Leaving a legacy is like a tree planting. It will always seem like forever to see the results of your efforts, but it will eventually bear fruit. My encouragement is that you do not worry about your life time or children’s life time, but beyond that. You and I need to be like that person who plants an olive tree. It takes three to seven years for you to start enjoying its fruit. Leave your children and children’s children something to work on. Shape your tomorrow by the seeds you plant today.
